Client Background

For over 65 years, Japanese company Hamamatsu Photonics has consistently developed and distributed photoelectric devices and their applications globally.

The project was to undertake an office refurbishment of its U.K. subsidiary in Welwyn Garden City. The goal was to revitalise the existing workspace, create additional innovation spaces, and incorporate a design that embodies the company’s heritage and ethos: “The spirit of pursuing the unknown and unexplored.”

The Design

The overall design is contemporary, with natural tones and hues of bright red and subtle cultural references that capture the essence of the brand.

Flooring styles and patterns have been cleverly crafted to define working zones. Contrasting lines of green carpet silhouette key areas, adding to the biophilic design elements that promote better wellness for staff.

The main office space is decorated with soft green accents on the walls and furnishings. Oak-finished desks and onyx chairs with matching storage are complemented by ceiling-hanging baffles, which improve ambient sound.

The newly partitioned boardroom has been mindfully constructed with Kross glassed partitions and acoustic wall panels to optimise noise reduction.

Japanese-themed wallpaper graphics and 3D signage weave through the space and into the additional office spaces.

The new workplace can now enable a better-connected workforce who can use the multifunction spaces to continue to innovate and collaborate across the business.
